Sheltie with a black eye.

I wondered about mange, the photo reminded me of that post that Tara Lynn made last week about Caliber losing fur around his eye. She used some sort of Chinese herb to treat his mange, so maybe you should give it a try? I don't know if it will work or not since I think he had a different type of mange, but it's worth a try. She didn't say anything about it being expensive, just that it helped quickly.

That looks awful! He really looks like he has a black eye - the poor thing!

I am sorry he has genetic mange. I would definately be talking to the breeder.
 
I was taking pictures yesterday evening and when I looked at the pictures I couldn't believe that was my sheltie I was looking at. Here are some more pictures of his eye. He was eating corn on the cob.

Now I'm just nervous as to what the blood work might turn up. I'm extremely lucky in that a few days ago my parents gave me some money to spend on myself. If I hadn't received that money I honestly don't know what Smudge and I would have done. I was so angry/scared/confused at the vet's office that I forgot to get Smudge chipped! I always wanted to get him chipped when he got fixed. Oh well. If history repeats itself (and I've got a feeling it will) then I'll just get it done the next time I have to take him in for something.

Also. Even though the vet told me he cannot spread this type of mange to other animals/people, would it be wise to take him to obedience anyway? If there's even a fraction of a chance he might infect another animal I won't take him.

Is that reaction due to the MDR1 gene mutation? If the alternate medicine would cost considerably less than daily Interceptor, then Smudge can get tested for the mutation.

Cost is $70 and you only need provide swabs from his mouth. The kit is sent to you upon request from Washington State University and you or your vet can do the swab.

Back from the vet. These next few days are going to be very scary for Smudge and me. The vet said while she was doing the sugery (for him getting fixed) that he bled a lot more than normal. Starting in the morning he gets pain pills, and he has to be carried everywhere for at least 24 hours. He's wiped out asleep in my room right now. He's really scaring me though. :uhoh:

The vet said he may have internal bleeding, and I have to keep a close eye on him. I work graveyard, and I wish more than anything in the world I could stay home tonight, but I can't. I've made my mom and dad promise to CARRY him outside to go to the bathroom while I am gone, and I am going to show them the correct way the vet showed me. She said if he starts to swell down there to call her ASAP and get him to the clinic.

His bloodwork came back ok, but I'm not sure what all that tested for. I have to take him back in 2 weeks for more treatment of his eye. At this point in time I am saying that Smudge will not be going to obedience. He's going through too much right now, and I don't think it's fair to pile something new on him when he is going through treatment. Maybe next time, Smudge. :sadsmile:

You are going through a truly horrific time and I know how it feels. Sometimes the vet seems to be speaking a totally different language and you just nod your head and say: "Whatever.....just make him healthy again".
 
I'm so sorry that both you and Smudge are going through all of this right now but remember, you are a good mom and you are doing everything you can for this little guy! I will keep you both in my thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery for your little buddy. Hugs to both of you!
 
Hopefully all turns out for Smudge. I sure would call the breeder to inform her what is going on. Hopefully this breeder will not breed her bitch or the sire until she knows which sheltie carries the mange gene.

I wonder if there is a test for the brood bitch, or the sire, that tells a breeder if this gene exists before either one is bred? I know things can happen like dentition, etc.. just like in humans. Hopefully somewhere along the line of breeding, this can be stopped.

All good happy endings for you and Smudge. That is such a shame you and Smudge are going through this.

Poor Smudge and poor you! How very frightening it is to watch your little puppy go through this. Sending good thoughts and prayers and hugs to you.
