Update...*sigh*

I thought I would post an update here. The dogs were crated after their naughty behavior (see beginning of this thread) and we made it a point to walk them in the morning and the afternoon since we were feeling guilty about crating them all day.

At the beginning of the month we decided to allow them out of the crates during the day again. We try to take them for walks in the morning, but it has been really rainy so it hasn't gotten done every morning, though they still get a walk when we get home and plenty of exercise/play/learning in the evenings.

They were doing really well, and I was very happy. We just make it a point to put EVERYTHING away when we are gone.

Well yesterday we got home from work, they got their walk, and we had to run out to the store (we were gone for maybe 30 minutes?) During that time, Lexi chewed the corner of the wall. I was furious. I guess she was upset that we left and didn't give her anything to do (I give them both a frozen Kong in the mornings).

We are renting this house, and now have so many repairs to do.

I am not comfortable leaving them in their crates for 8-9 hours during the day, don't know anyone who can come let them out, but can't afford to keep finding things that they've ruined. I'm thinking of buying a second x-pen and hooking them together, but that's not a ton of room.

She is 2 years old. I guess she is never going to get over this habit?

OH no, Lexi that was a very bad girl. I feel for you Ashely, to bad you don't know some one you could trust to take them out.

From all that ive read and experienced....2 years old is still a puppy and that means you're going to have setbacks. With Koji if we crated him, he was crazy! he didn't settle down until he was 3. We couldn't trust him until then. Actually we didnt trust him unbroken he was 4. He started to get free run in short stints at about 3.5. Full trust came around 4.

So you're not alone. IMHO, the best thing that seemed to work was daycare once a week. Everyone suggested it and it was my last resort as I couldn't afford it, but it was a sanity saver.

Besides you not liking them in crates for 8 hours, are they suffering? Or not liking it? I know many people seem to crate dogs that long everyday without issues.

Just thinking out loud. You're not alone and yes, you may have to deal with this for another year or two. Lexi may just mature slower, or is one of tose crazy dogs full of energy. Hehehe. It's going to take her longer to control herself.

I think a large x-pen will be perfect. Big enough, so they can move around and change sleeping positions, but they are still confined, so they can't destroy the house.

Oh wow..I feel for you too Ashley  I do think getting another x-pen and attaching them together is a great idea. It's enough room for them to wiggle around in yet keep them contained. It's better then crating them all day OR the alternative...chewed up walls :uhoh:

I am in the same position you are in that I don't know of anyone to help me during the day. I would love to perhaps work part time, but I don't want to leave Toby in a crate that long or Megan unattended

Bailey is alone all day while I'm at work. I walk her for 35 mins every morning and I have a dogwalker, who walks her for 25 mins in the afternoon. I recently set up a webcam and all Bailey does is :sleepy:

Oh Lexi, why do you do this to your mom.

Ashley, honestly, if the crate is properly sized it really isn't a hardship on them to be created all day; just make sure they have water. Even a single x-pen is plenty of room for them during the day. We make the 'experience' harder on us than it really is for the dogs.

We actually have a "doggie proofed" section of our garage we set the x-pen in during the warmer months because the dogs LOVE laying on the cool concrete. We give them water and a few things to chew on (not that they touch them but they are there if they want them) and go on our way without fussing over them.

If Lexi needs to be crated when you are gone, please do so both for your own peace of mind and her safety since you really don't know what she may find to chew on when you are gone. She'll be fine! Trust me. You give her enough exercise between walks, agility classes and playing in the yard that she'll be just fine.

If I did get a job, it wouldn't pay enough for me to hire a dog walker. When I did have a part time job 10-5 a few days a week, my son was home in the afternoon and he could let Megan out. His new schedule doesn't permit that anymore :rolleyes2:. On the other hand, thank GOD he is busy with school and work and doesn't have time to help me....Sorry, staying on subject !

Don't despair.

I thought Robby was going to be a terror. He chewed furniture, both wood and fabric, he chewed up two window sills, he worked on shoes and slippers, and a lot more. Once he knew he was home for good, and also got a bit older (more mature) and more confident, the behavior disappeared and he has been good (relatively speaking) ever since. Cheers, Will
