Two sorry shelties

well, 10 year old foster Spicey is BIG time chewer... so we don't know if she is relieving her childhood or what... and yeah, she gets crated.

Naughty Lexi.

I crate my young dogs(each one until I trust them- Justice 1.5yr, Ember 2 yrs, Diva 2.5yrs)and work 9-5 and they don't have an issue with it. Birch right now is crated until I get home from work. My JRT mix Jazz was crated until she wa 5 yrs old because she would eat things. Better that then surgery for foreign bodies.

What I did do was get a big kennel I think the one I have is 42in , that way they can have a bed, toys, etc and move around but are still crated. Birch is doing well with housetraining so he is that everyday. Trust me they do well, just make sure they are exercised well and Give them a kong or something to do.

Oh lexi stop torturing your mum!
I guess from what I read alfie is not that big of a terror when being left alone. The most he did was chewing on my luggage tag, and destroyed a comic book. I leave him in my bed room which is connected to a bathroom. His wire crate is in the bathroom. We use the wire crate as his toilet, unlike everybody else lol(he is like that already when I got him) he is usually alone for 8 to 10hrs a day. But not everyday. I leave him 3 or 4 food dispensing toys when I leave, he seems quite content.

If my room wasn't available I would leave him in the kitchen where the baby gate is. Come on Lexi, earn your freedom!!

Mines are confined in one room. We are gone for more than 10 hours. I think my dogs will get eventually bored and do stuff if I let them roam free. I have a professional dog walker comes in aroud noon time to give them potty break and short walk. I have been doing this since they are pups so I don't know how I would feel if I don't have anyone to stop by for my dogs when I am at work. Even though I have a feeling that they will be sleeping most of the time and be okay.

Lexi, you are making your mother very frustrated! I agree that we take crating harder than our dogs do. They LIKE having a safe den. Remember you're doing it for her health as much as your sanity, she could easily eat something dangerous whilst chewing.

My old foster was a holy terror and was crated or at puppy daycare any time we couldn't supervise her. (She'd tear the books off the shelf and chew them up, figure out how to open my closet and eat the shoes, get into the laundry basket, etc.) I felt terrible that I had to crate her at night, but she obviously slept very well once she got used to it. Lots of exercise, lots of healthy chewing distractions - maybe a bone she could lick/gnaw to work her jaws? B

2 is still a puppy in a lot of ways. Maybe I missed it but do you have a room that's easier to dog proof? My family dog is 14 and she still gets babygated into the kitchen area when no one is home to prevent her deciding the rugs are good places to pee. She just naps. She was about 2 or 3 when we started using the kitchen as a crate instead of an actual crate. Beau is about 7 and we don't even own a crate (...yet, I know we need to get on that.) We've had a few accidents but no obnoxious chewing.

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement :)

I guess I am feeling sort of like a poor dog parent since my 2 year old dog won't stop chewing. I know she is still a puppy, but I can't figure out where I went wrong! She gets a lot of exercise, and always has access to appropriate chewable items.

Anyways, I'm going to order another x-pen and see if that works. I will crate them during the day for the time being.

I wish we had a "dog room" that we could use, but our house is SO small that all rooms are crammed with furniture. I think if we used a couple x-pens together we could keep them in the living room (we have a living room/dining room/kitchen that's pretty open) where there are no wall corners...so I might try that.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I also have a very very small house- no room for an x-pen, and I DON'T want it in the middle of the living room. Sandstorm is in his crate for 7 1/2 hours mon thru fri, and I stopped feeling bad about it. Also, there is no practical way for anyone to stop by and let him out, so in the crate he stays!

When Bacca was finally toilet trained but not yet chew trained, I used an Xpen with a soft sided crate tucked inside. It worked great!

It kept in trained in crates, but gave him a little extra room to move around during the day. Water bowl and toys as well.

Methinks though that Lexi is old enough now to stop destroying things. What boredum busters do you have for her?

I would definitely look into a dogwalker. Even if you can't find a professional one... see if there's a kid or a retired person near you who might be able to let the dogs out in the afternoon.

Also.... I am sure they are fine. Lexi will outgrow this one day.
