Update on Deska's injury

Deska had xrays today to work out why he has been limping since his agility injury 5 weeks ago. The vet thought there was some indication of calcification and narrowing in the right elbow which could mean dysplasia. I really hope not as that will spell the end of his competing. He gave me a referral to an osteo specialist and said I should really get her opinion before training again. Of course we have an interstate flyball competition in 2 weeks and if Deska doesnt compete the whole team has to pull out (everyone has paid up and booked accomodation)! Have no idea what to do.

Atm Mr D is curled up around me - he came out of the aneasthetic well but is still a bit sooky and dopey. He also has nice white teeth now!

And just to make things difficult, Tully knocked off my porridge this am and the tub of margarine this pm (even licked the container out) while I was at the vet! So expecting a runny butt tonight!

wow. I sure hope everything turns out ok. I know nothing about competition at all. will they allow a stand in for Deska?

Oh gosh hope there is no runny butt..i hate those.

What you should do is warn them now. Certainly it is an issue but what do they expect you to do risk Deska's health :confused2: The earlier you tell them the better the odds of finding a sub or being able to cancel stuff.

That is a no-fun position to be in. If Deska is really hurting, then although your friends might be disappointed, they would do the same for their injured dogs (by pulling them from the competition). It stinks, but Deska's long term health is more important.

I hope you are able to get in with the specialist and get some definite answers.

I truly hope it isn't dysplasia! But the most important thing is Deska's health -- something folks should understand. Competitive sports means running the risk of injury -- nobody does it on purpose.

I hope it's not dysplasia. You don't want Deska to hurt himself. I would warn your team now. Maybe they can find a replacement in time.

oh boy, a rotten day is never complete without the runny, fuzzy butt! :dead:
So sorry to hear this, hang in there, hopefully is NOT hip dysplasia!

Thinking of you three, plus kitteh today!

Do they not have reserves for the team in case a dog is ill?

As for elbow dysplasia, as you may know this is a big discussion topic in the labrador world as it has hit the breed (along with hip dysplasia) very hard. What I can tell you is, it is manageable and it does not mean a dog has to stop doing agility. You may have to take it easier and do fewer comps, but I know people who are on display teams with dogs that have elbow dysplasia.

My other thought is that ED usually appears when a dog is a pup, in fact most dogs are showing signs by 6 months. It doesn't usually appear due to an injury and you will have noticed signs long before - such as stiffness when getting up, intermittent limp (which might be in the back legs rather than front), reluctance to repeatedly get up and down and less enthusiasm for exercise or play.

It sounds to me as though Deska's problem is recent and due to injury, thereby making it less likely to be ED, which is relatively uncommon in Shelties anyway.

I hope that helps, take it step by step with Deska and don't rule out him making a complete recovery.

I'm so sorry about Deska! :( I guess I always misunderstood (or missed some posts), because I thought Tully was the only one who did flyball.
