Interesting, but expensive. I might have to look into getting some. Do you make it into a pet shampoo or do you spray it on?

I was thinking of ordering some of this. I looked it up and you can use it on dogs too. This is similar to what Megan was talking about.

Last year Canada got really strict when it came to pesticides use so it is extremely hard now to find anything, all natural or other wise. Even things that are not out lawed now require resellers to carry specialized licensing to carry them so many just aren't bothering.

While I LOVE that Canada is becoming more environmentally friendly, its also proving to be a pain in the behind. :smile2:
 
I just thought I'd revive this thread, since its that time of year again when we're worried about keeping the creepy crawlies away from our fur kids.

We've been having a very wet, cold spring in Southern Ontario and as a result, the ticks have been REALLY bad this year.

Usually they only pick up ticks in fields or on hikes, but this year they can't go into the backyard without picking them up. I caught one crawling on the back of my neck while I was in bed yesterday morning! :dead:

This year I'm going to break down and buy Advantix for my three. I've had enough of ticks!
 
I was told at the vet's on Friday that they had someone bring in a tick in March that tested positive for lyme. So far we are okay for ticks.

I'm not a squemish person and LOVE to pick up all sorts of crawlie things, but ticks REALLY grose me out.

I think I'll see about getting some Advantix sooner than later. :eek2:
 
Ive used Sentinal for my last sheltie for all 4 years and never had a flea problem in all my years with dogs. ever.

I figure I'm not in an area with a huge flea problem or am around pets that are also on some kind of flea medication during the hot season, I'm thinking I'll put Precious on Sentinal as well at the end of May. I never had to worry about the complaint that ooo Sentinal doesn't kill adult fleas. I still find Sentinal to do a perfect preventative job and never had any kind of bad reaction some other flea meds have caused pets.

I actually emailed the woman who makes this last year when we had the worst fall tick season ever and I wanted to try it. She told me it's not effective on ticks but they're working on developing something that is. So apparently it's great for fleas, but you need something else for ticks.

I treated my whole yard a few weeks ago with diatamaceous earth and so far, so good. Although I didn't realize until after I'd done it that you apparently need to reapply it after every rain!! :eek2:
 
A natural way of killing fleas and ticks in your yard is to use beneficial nematodes. They're tiny micro organisms that kill and eat all sorts of lawn pests, including grubs, Japanese beetles, fleas and ticks. The nematodes are harmless to people, pets and plants and earth worms and naturally occur in dirt.

They become active in water and area active for months, so there's no need to reapply after each rainfall.

These are big in Canada right now, since pesticide use has been banned. They seem to work great, I'm not sure why we ever used chemicals to kill lawn pests!

For what its worth, for Skye I use the Preventic collar for ticks and am switching this year from Frontline to Comfortis for fleas. - Dr. Mac

Dr.Mac,
could you please clarify if dog has to wear it all the time or just when going into the woods? Also how do you apply it tightly to the skin, when shelties have their ruff and hair? I am much liking collar idea as Che REALLY does not like any topicals so collar could be lesser evil specially if one does not have to wear it all the time- we are suburban dogs so ticks are only a possibility when we have an outing and I am not worried about fleas until August:yes:
