What's in a name?

I stole my puppies name from Justice's Mom. I fell in love with the name Justice, and when I saw my new puppy, could not get the name out of my head. I asked first, and nicely, and Justice's Mom did not object. I spell it Justus, more often than not. I wanted his registered name to be tied to the Law and Order theme, but the breeder had already named and registered him.

Bobby was named after the London peace officers. His registered name is UCD Keep'n The Peace UD RE, ASCA UD

Lily was already named when I adopted her. I would have named her Grouch, because she grumbles and growls all the yime. :biggrin2:

I thought long and hard about a name for two days before we picked the puppy up. When we got to the breeder the wife fell in love with him because of his color and personality. He was also the "runt" of the litter. I still had not decided on a name for him at that time. The breeder had name all the puppies for record keeping reasons. He said he called him "Chase" because being the runt of the litter when he let them all out to run the little guy was always "chasing" the others. The wife and I looked at each other and said that's it and the name stuck.
Now our Green Wing Macaw was easy. His name is Zeus. He sits in his cage and looks out like a god surveying his kingdom.

I love Bobby's registered name. I might need to borrow that from you someday.

Also Lily  Isn't grumbles and growls a Lhasa breed trait.:wink2:

I love this thread too.
My first sheltie was Lady and I think my dad came up with her name it has been so long I have for gotten but I do recall she was always very much lady like all of her life.

Maggie I picked the name before I meet her. Wanted a tri for sure and she was the only one in the litter. Funny thing is when I told the people my name choice that what they called the mom but short for Magnolia.

Katie that one I picked before I meet, but I liked the name and it sounded Irish/ Scottish. It was a fun name for a fun happy go lucky girl.

Zak, came up with that name and it was on our short list. Liked the way it sounded and it seemed to fit our boy. Plus it means "The Lord Remembers" and coming after we lost Katie that meaning just meant something to me.

So Chris when will the railroad man arrive???? Cool idea and tribute.

Callie came from the rescue with her name already and I did not change it.
Cranberry - well saw his just born picture and wanted him- his litter was born on Thanksgiving day so I just had to go with a name that reflected that. so his temporary litter name had been Pumpkin (for maybe a week) so I kept that in the registered name: Pumpkin n Sweet Cranberry Relish.
so then I got Cran's sister Dixie (at 10 months) and kept her name since she already responded to it. and in keeping with our Turkey day food theme- Pumpkin n Sweet Potato Pie.

Our daughter, Emily named our Mally. Mally is shortened from Malachi. Emily has a list of Christian names picked for if she ever has children. Malachi was on that list.
Note: Mally will answer to Malachi.

Serendipity is a rescue dog who was originally named "Ginger" (which didn't suit her at all). She was a return from the Humane Society - someone had adopted her, and then returned her after nine months because she would just lay in a corner and cower. I was asked to foster her because the shelter environment stressed her out so much. Up until this point, although I had fostered many dogs, I had never "owned" a dog. Serendipity came to me during a very low point in my life - a beloved family member had died, a close friend was battling breast cancer for the third time, one of my students was terminally ill with cancer...I was completely overwhelmed with life in general, and the last thing I thought I needed was another responsibility. I had no plans of fostering - never mind adopting! When I adopted her, and I was searching for a name, Serendipity seemed perfect - she came into my life by chance/fate/destiny. I wasn't looking for a dog - never mind a hairy 17" husky/sheltie/corgi cross - I usually went for the Beauceron/Rottweiler/German Shepherd - type dogs. Lawrence Block defined Serendipity as: Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you've found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for.” This perfectly describes what she is to me.

As confirmation - when I looked up the short form of her name, "Seren", I found out it meant "star" in Welsh. My name, Tara, means "star" in multiple languages, including Nepali (I had returned from Nepal just a few weeks before fostering Seren).

Seren is my sweetheart, but she doesn't have the confidence/drive/interest to be a competition dog, and I knew I wanted to compete at high levels with my next dog. I bought him from a breeder as a puppy, and I was allowed to choose his registered name - "Herdabout Manifest Destiny". I wanted the name to reflect the fact that we can influence our destiny to a certain point. His call name is "Starr" (middle English), because a) I hoped his destiny was to be a star (cocky - I know - but think of the idea of manifest destiny! Plus, he already is a star in my eyes!), and b) I wanted him to fit into the star theme.

So that's why my forum name is "3stars" - Tara, Seren, and Starr.

This is an interesting thread - I've loved hearing how you all came to find the perfect name for your dogs!

Romeo was named so because he looked like a heartbreaker (and now I know he loves to hump the ladies). His surname Sangiovese because it seemed to go well with his Italian sounding name.

Juliet, well that was a pretty obvious choice to me because I've already got the Romeo half! Her registered name is Sharndah Star Crossed Luva, because in the Romeo & Juliet story, they were star crossed lovers, except with me they are not, they are brother and sister!

I always have fun with the girl's names. Usually vetoed by Tofu Pup. She is better at names. The males always have a one word or quick name...ie.,
Trade Mark, Maritime. It is easier when people breed to your dog to just say the name, and people know. People who don't always know the call name, can just say "Maritime". For the first few years of Musashi, people would say "I bred to Pop Star". Over the years, everyone learned he was just Musashi.
Being here in Connecticut, we follow the University of Ct. Womens basketball team. They are huge here in the Northeast. The number 1 player nationally for several years was Maya Moore, until she graduated this past spring. So, the puppy we are bringing out this year is "Rabbit Run Just One Moore", and her call name is Maya. She will debut in a couple of weeks. A very red sable and white girl by AM/CA CH Rabbit Run Cindahope Fair Trade.
Of all the sheltie names I have ever heard over the years, my favorite is
"Robert Red Furred", a sable boy.

We loved Pop Star here, Sandstorms grandsire- he looks nothing like him, lol! Sandstorm towers over him.

I love the Maya Moore / UCONN reference too- that is wonderful. Go women, go UCONN. I am really trying hard not to start a basketball discussion. One of the only good things about winter.
