What's in a name?

Our "Scottish" named Shelties

Both of our shelties are quite young rescues, and had "temporary" names given to them while in foster care. Because we are a family of Scots heritage, we decided that they not only should have full formal names like their AKC cousins have, but that those names should reflect that they are Scottish breed dogs. Therefore: "THE BRUCE'S ROBBY OF THE BURNS"
&
"THE BRUCE'S CEILIDH DANCER"

Explanation: We are very active in the Scottish community and in our clan/family organization - BRUCE being our surname and clan/family name. Robert Burns is the most beloved of all Scottish poets. A "burn" is a small river or stream, and we live at the confluence of two rivers. A ceilidh (pronounced KayLee) is a party where good food, conversation and dancing are all part of the program. We are very happy with the choices - and our shelties seem to be just as happy with their names as we are. Yours aye, Will

Thanks for the pronunciation for ceilidh. Gaelic is not one of those languages that you can just sound out and get the right pronunciation because the letters may be Latin letters but the sounds they make are very different. (Spoken from experience since her boy is Edan (AY-den) and often gets pronounced EE-den.)

This has been such a fun thread to read how all of our dogs got their names. Just must add mine.

Lexi: My first choice was Lexi, because we are big Gray's Anatomy fans and I loved that character's name. Of course, we had a couple of months to make the decision and after going thru multiple names with my 2 daughters we had finally settled on Sydney....even had the tag made. When I went to pick up my puppy her breeder said, (not knowing our name choices) " She looks exactly like a dog I had who was my special dog, Lexi". Well, we immediately dumped all of our other choices and went straight back to Lexi. The breeder was thrilled!

Pyper: My brother chose Pyper for his future puppy and I loved it. When he got his next pup and named her Prudence (yuck), I asked if I could use Pyper. Her Kennel is Paray. So her registered named had to be Paray's____.
I tried and tried to come up with something clever having to do with pipe music.... As I got to know my puppy, I began feeling so lucky to have found her. (I had barely started looking and she just showed up). Laying in bed one morning, my brain went to Serendipity and it just seemed perfect! So she became: Paray's Serendipity "Pyper"

Next project....paint the crate!

This has been a fantastic thread! Everybody has such good stories about why certain names appealed to them!

FLIP - My first dog as a child (a Brittany spaniel), who was named after an identical (but black instead of red) dog in my first-grade reader.

BUNN - The black lab I had as a child. She was orginally named "Bugs Bunny" in honor of my dad going to work for a subsidiary of Warner Brothers.

RASCAL - A black lab/Brittany mix, and my very first "heart dog". He was the son of the two dogs above, and looked like a black Cocker Spaniel. One of the smartest dogs I've ever had, and I swear he had a rascally sense of humor, thus the name.

NEECHEE - My first Sheltie, my best heart dog, and my constant companion for 17 years. (And if you've seen my posts, I talk about him a LOT.) His call name "Neechee" is a combination of the (eastern dialect) Cherokee words for "little dog", more formally, Ananeecheekee. My dad and his family are Cherokee (I'm half) and I grew up speaking the language. He soon became just plain old Neechee since he was so tiny (less than a pound when I got him home). His registration name was "BJ'S LAUGHING KACHINA", BJ being my first two initials (and a nickname) and Laughing Kachina because (my now-ex said) he always made me laugh, and he was a little household god. (Kachina is a Hopi Indian name - I had just come back from a trip to Phoenix and the Heard Museum with there marvelous collection of kachina dolls). Often referred to as "Mr. Puppy" (because it sounded so undignified) and "Big Billy Bada**" Billy was actually a fictional character who sometimes decided to inhabit my dogs, most often on days when they needed to be on their best behavior, i.e obedience trials. I don't know how many times BBB showed up ringside with me, but he usually wasn't the dog I started from home with.

MAGGIE - Actually, my ex named her. She was a rescued Border collie who was originally named Nikki. Her registered name was "BJ's WAKE UP MAGGIE MAE" after the Rod Stewart song. We did not have her long, as she died in a tragic accident.

MAX - My male Border Collie. He was named "BJ's MAGIC MAX" after the Billy Crystal character in "The Princess Bride". Often called "Maximillian" after he cost me a small fortune in vet bills after injuring himself falling off a 2-story pile of logs at the tender age of 7 months. Also occasionally called "BBB" (see above).

BELA - My puppy mill mama rescue. Sweet, dainty, and scared of her own shadow. Her original name was "Lady", but I thought, new life, new name - one more in keeping with her natural beauty (she IS a Sheltie, after all). "Bella" is beautiful in Italian, but I dropped one of the "L's" in fear that someone would mistake me for a Twilight fan. I now tell everyone she's a one-L Bela in honor of Bela Lugosi (whose films I am a fan of).

Oh, and the best one of all belonged to one of my cats.

After my third and last miscarriage, I said NO MORE to trying to get pregnant, which was a bitter pill to my parents, who longed for grandchildren (I am an only child). My dad got SO vocal about it that I told him I'd name my next child after him. So we ended up with........

BOBCAT - My dad's name is Bob, and the grandfurkid was a cat. I got TONS of mileage out of that one - fortunately, my family is always laughing at something no matter how dire the situation is.

. my brain went to Serendipity and it just seemed perfect! So she became: Paray's Serendipity "Pyper"

Diva's registered name is Serendipity's Prima Donna. As a general rule I like the name Serendipity but now not so much. Here's why, Diva was from her breeder first litter with her new kennel so we had to use it(in contract). The breeder liked it for the same reasons. We found out later that someone else who just started breeding was also using that kennel name. The person actually yelled at Rachel at nationals 2 years ago about. Had we realized we would pushed for something else but what are you going to do. She already had points, couldn't change it.

When we choose our kennel name we made extra sure no one else was using it. It took over a year of thinking and research to make sure. I know no one is using it so if I see another shletie with that name I can yell at them at nationals too.:wink2:

spiffy crates:yes:
did you paint them or order them that way?

I like the idea of "theme" names - particularly if you are going to build a "troop" of Shelties.

My breeder named Bacca's litter after "wine" names - there was Portia and Rose, Remy Martin, etc. Unfortunately, was never destined for the show ring because he was cyrptic.

But funnily enough, I inadvertently named him after wine anyway. As I think I posted earlier, his real name is Chewbacca, but we call him Bacca which in Greek is the "frenzy state induced by wine)! LOL! This was not intentional! Fate, perhaps?
