What's in a name?

My husband likes L names, don't ask me why. When I brought Lucky in by surprise, he got so tickled but had to tease me. Your LUCKY you and the pup got through the front door. So he called him Lucky. He was a wedding shower that I attended prize. The litter was next door. Lucky is also called his Lordship.

Lil' Lady we stuck with the Ls. Tofu Pup brought up a name that a breeder had and darn I wish I would have thought of it, Little Miss Lah Dee Dah. That name fits her to a tee. Lady is called many names actually, her Royal Highness, The Diva, Dirtball Diva, unofficially Little Miss Lah Dee Dah.

I love this thread and love reading about your dogs names.

Here's the story about mine.

When I got Miko, I didn't have any name picked out for him. I wanted something "normal", but there were just too many Bailey's and Reilly's out there. I wanted something Hawaiian, but dang, they are like German names, LONG! lol. I'm not sure where I got Miko (Mee-ko) from, but this was per-Pocahontas days, so it wasn't from there. The sad thing is, I'd say it was Japanese, but it's a girls name in Japanese (and Miko's a boy). But, it went, and I'm glad I kept it.

I later changed his kennel name when AKC allowed changes. His mom is registered as Dark Edges, and as I think Miko is perfect, he is now My Dark Perfection. I think I stole a great Champion name for some dog, lol. Oh well.

Koji. Well, we wanted to go with the Japanese them and I wanted a dog with a 2 syllable name. It's easy to yell and do commands with. I liked that name and didn't look at the meaning until someone asked me. Koji, in Japanese, means happy second son. How fitting, huh? He is the second "son" and well, he was a very happy puppy. I'd say he still is.

His kennel name, OTOH, describes who he truly is. lol. It's Outta My Mind. I went with this for a few reasons. 1. I had a nervous breakdown because of him. I was totally crazy. And his dad's name is Mind Games. I felt it was fitting.

Now that both their names are Japanese, when they go over Rainbow Bridge, I'm going to tattoo their names, in Japanese (aka characters) on my inner wrist. So, they'll always be with me. I just have to decide if I want to "create" something for Miko or just use the girls meaning. Poor little boy, stuck with a girls name.

And lastly, if my next dog is an agility dog, I have a name picked out. It's not Japanese, but it's a word I've always loved. :) I wonder what it'd be in Japanese. May have to look into that. :)

So, there's mine. Miko and Koji.

Such a fun thread love reading all the ideas and names!!!

We have one cat who's name is Sassafras, but we call her Sassy she was named when I got her from a rescue and kept the name b/c it fits her.

Our other cat's name is Pumpkin and I named her that when she was a kitten b/c of her coloring, half of her face was orange.

When we got our Westie I wanted something that seemed big b/c they have big dog personalities, his registered name is Arrowhead Acres Alexander the Great. The breeder required to have the kennel's name in front of his name (she had it filled out on the paper when we got him).

When we got Henry I wanted a historical name that was Welsch since that's where they are from, his registered name is Sir Captian Henry Morgan. Yes that Captian Morgan (he was welsch).

Well gee...when our litter of yellow labs were born 7 years ago,I had already picked out my pup.But was waiting for the name to come to me.One day Brian & I were watching the Coca Cola 600,and since we are avid Nascar folks..and I love Earnhardt..it seemd to fit. So Earnhardt was named that day.

Trapp was named by Janet as part of her theme for Sasha's trio.He was named that because he got trapped inside of Sasha, and came out feet first..(complete with blue feet) Resgisterd name ~Sir Baron Von Trapp

Jasper, again a name givin to him.He was part of Emma's gem litter. All the pups were givin a themed name for precious gems,(Topax,Onyx..etc) And Jasper was born with this white area on the back of his neck, that still to this day looks like a "J"..so Jasper's name was kept. Registered name ~Lavendel's Precious Gem.

Mia was already named by rescue. And it fit her.Our only dilemma was on how it was pronounced. with a long "I" or short as in MeeYa. We opted for the long "I" pronounciation. Although deaf, and she would never hear the sound of her name,it just was fitting.

Our kitty,Bumper is blind as well. And she spent a few days "bumping" into things when she first came here,so Bumper was named.

This has been such a fun thread to read how all of our dogs got their names. Just must add mine.

Lexi: My first choice was Lexi, because we are big Gray's Anatomy fans and I loved that character's name. Of course, we had a couple of months to make the decision and after going thru multiple names with my 2 daughters we had finally settled on Sydney....even had the tag made. When I went to pick up my puppy her breeder said, (not knowing our name choices) " She looks exactly like a dog I had who was my special dog, Lexi". Well, we immediately dumped all of our other choices and went straight back to Lexi. The breeder was thrilled!

Pyper: My brother chose Pyper for his future puppy and I loved it. When he got his next pup and named her Prudence (yuck), I asked if I could use Pyper. Her Kennel is Paray. So her registered named had to be Paray's____.
I tried and tried to come up with something clever having to do with pipe music.... As I got to know my puppy, I began feeling so lucky to have found her. (I had barely started looking and she just showed up). Laying in bed one morning, my brain went to Serendipity and it just seemed perfect! So she became: Paray's Serendipity "Pyper"

Next project....paint the crate!

OOOLALA..those painted crates are FAB!

If it makes you feel any better about Miko having a Japanese girls name, someone in my agility club has an adorable little Papillion boy who is also named Miko.
