Vicky & I posted the following article to our blog at Lathe of Dreams, but we were hoping that our good friends & Sheltie folks here might be able to better advise us.
Any thoughts or recommendations from Sheltie Nation? Reading the thread by RetiredProf at Sheltie Nation: Suddenly Paranoid about Flea Meds reinforces our concerns. Is this common among Shelties? What do other Sheltie owners and breeders use to prevent flea & ticks?
http://www.latheofdreams.com/?p=1302 said:Kiyomi will be 7 months old this November 5th. She has lost all of her puppy fur and now has all her adult fur. Her last puppy tooth (upper front canine) came out a few weeks ago, so now she has all her adult teeth coming in as well. Since she has an inverted vagina, she may be prone to vaginitis and urinary tract infections. Two different veterinarians have recommended we allow her to go through one menstruation in the hopes her vagina develops before we get her spayed. She’ll likely go into heat sometime between November and January, so Vicky & I are keeping an eye on her.
Both Kiyomi’s breeder (Jade Mist Shetland Sheepdogs of Davidsonville, MD) and other Shelties owners have scared us about the harsh effects of chemical flea & tick repellents on Shelties. We have heard about seizures and death as a result of Advantix and Frontline Plus. Out of concern, Vicky & I have been using Liquid Net for Dogs sprayed onto Kiyomi weekly and rubbed into her fur… so that Kiyomi smells like citronella and lemongrass most of the time.
Since Kiyomi has been spending alot more time outdoors with us, we’re trying to find the best possible flea & tick medication/repellent for her time spent in dog parks, taking walks outdoors, and in the brush with Vicky & I. One friend recommended Frontline which he uses on his Sheltie and Dachshund. Our veterinary tech recommends Advantix. With both, we’ve been asked to watch her for possible side-effects or reactions.
To other Sheltie owners and breeders, what medication or repellent would you recommend for your Sheltie? Kiyomi is a 7-month-old, 13-inch, 15lb female Shetland Sheepdog. She is currently on Interceptor monthly and sprayed weekly with Liquid Net. We’d like something a little stronger or protective for her time spent outdoors, but won’t hurt our little fur-kid.
