Bacca bit me!!!!!

I did exactly that with their bones after I posted last.

They had both taken their bones outside and were gnawing away at them. I called them both to me and they came immediately. I retrieved their bones and made them work for them all over again. I'll do the same in another 5 minutes or so.
 
I've taken their bones away twice more since my last post. Re-establishing control bit by bit.
 
Now I'm going to groom the little buggers! Be very, very afraid, boys! Momma's coming at you with all the tools of her trade!

I know, it goes without saying when it comes to our favourite topic to heartily disagree on hahahaha

but seriously, I remember that the boys always had issues around feeding time, from what I remember and it seems to be escalating, so i compltely agree with Sophie on this one...

You know what?
Toffee comes to me so that I hold his bone while he chews on it!
Actually he brings his nasty rawhide, throws it in my lap and proceeds to climb on me (if you are on the couch) and nudges it until you to hold it for him, LOL
He also does that with my friends if he likes them, lol and if they are foolish enough to hold the bone for him for easier chewing access.

So maybe handeeding might be a good try, too?
 
:eek2: Bacca!!! Do you know if he was intentionally going for your hand? Or just trying to get the food and accidentally nipped you instead?

Bailey has nipped me twice because of food. It was her front teeth and she didn't break skin. Both times it was because she grabbed food off the floor and I took it out of her mouth. She snapped to try and grab the food back, but got my hand instead. In her case, I think she was testing me. She hasn't done this in a while.

She also would get angry when you took her food bowl away. She would scream at me. I stopped all this by taking her food bowl away and when she was calm, I returned her bowl with more food. Other times, I would stick my hand in her bowl, while she was eating and put a high reward treat in there. Whenever, I took a bone away from her, I gave her a treat for allowing me to take it. I don't do this all the time anymore. Only every once in a while, so she never knows when it's gonna happen. And of course as a puppy, I would pet her, massage her and stick my hand in her bowl while she was eating. She's never had an issue with that.

If this bizarre behavior continues, I would get a vet check up and if everything is normal, I would consider a behaviorist. I hired a behaviorist for Bailey's craziness when the phone rings. He wasn't the greatest behaviorist, but he did pinpoint things that I never would've picked up. Anyway, I think you're making some good progress and I hope Bacca never does this again.

Good job Barb, I was going to suggest that. I do this occasionally with bones and with their food bowls, especially with Toby since he's newest to our home. He's excellent about giving up what I've taken. After I've taken something from him I always praise him, then make him sit or lie down and then wait before I give the signal that he can have it again.

My trainer is really into the impulse control games, which you might want to try. She'll put a bunch of treats in her hand, palm up. The hand never moves around, but stays in the same stationary spot. The hand stays closed until the dog stops nosing it. When the nosing stops, the hand opens. If the dog goes after the hand or the treats, the hand closes. The dog only gets a treat if he/she is not nosing the hand or going after the treat and is giving you eye contact. There needs to be no talking, except to praise. Don't say anything if the dog isn't getting it.

This is one of Toby's favorite games. It teaches him his place and really builds his confidence. I use this and different leave it activities to distract him when he's having anxiety.
