So ... As you may have guessed I'm getting a puppy :p Which I am quite exited about. Seeing as this also my first post here at SheltieNation perhaps I should also say hi. I have been on here for quite a while just reading up on everything. Actually I was beginning to think I'd be researching forever and never actually get a dog :/

I live in a small townhouse on the Central Coast of NSW (Australia) with my fiancé and two 'boys' - which happen to be two parrots, Tease the Galah and Sy the Cockatoo. The only time I have ever had a dog before was when my mum bought one when I was about 12 years old for about 6 months. But I have had a multitude of other small pets over the years including rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, a rooster, parrots and ferrets (my favourite)! My partner on the other hand has grown up with dogs since both his grandmother and mother have always had mini foxies. His uncle also used to breed west highland white terriers and rough collies. He absolutely loves rough collies so that will be our next dog in a year or two down the road.

So now onto the exciting bit ... Puppies! I started contacting breeders about a month ago to see if any of them were expecting any litters soon. And so I got a few replies and cut out a few people until I ended up with one breeder that fit my general requirements. So ... The puppies were born this weekend! Right now they are around 2 days old so it will be 8-9 weeks before I bring one home but I figure that gives me plenty of time to prepare. Of course it will also test my patience, but oh well. There are four in the litter, all sables with two boys and two girls. I'm not sure which will be ours yet as the breeder wants to wait until they are a bit older to pick the ones she wants to keep.

And now pictures! http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b556/Skysong87/image_zps925d0506.jpg

Also if anyone could recommend any websites or books that they think might be particularly useful, please do! I want to be well prepared, at least as much as I can be.

Congratulations and welcome to the longest eight weeks in your life!!! Yes, I recommend The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete. All our Shelties were raised by their wise and effective methods -- with great results!!!

So exciting. Congratulations! I'm fairly new to Sheltie Nation myself (and sheltie's in general) and have found the forums here extremely helpful. The babies look so tiny and adorable! So hard to wait :smile2:

Thank you to you both! I do remember seeing that book recommended before. So I've now ordered it online and should be getting it within the next two weeks!

Oh goodness, I cannot keep up with all the Sheltie puppies exploding onto the scene! It is so very exciting. Congrats, the litter looks cute as does Mom. You are wise to read up as much as you can, and get some sleep, too!

Can't wait to hear which one you get. Keep those photos coming.

Welcome and congratulations! You've picked the right time to join the conversation. It seems puppy fever has struck the forum and a number of folks have new puppies in their homes. It makes me wish I was bringing one home a lot sooner than reality will allow. (We are one a few local breeder waiting lists but I probably won't have a little one until next year at the earliest.)

Congrats!

I truly think we are having Sheltie-baby-boomers this year. I don't think I've ever seen so many new puppy announcements.

Welcome to the forum

Two must have books....the illustrated guide to Sheltie grooming and Sheltie Talk.

The grooming book is geared to serious show grooming but it does give some wonderful tips for home too. You can adapt it to your needs.

Best of luck!
