I'm getting a puppyyyyyyyyy!

Yes they can. The AKC has something on their website about it. A DNA test is required. If I remember correctly, Calliesmom's Jocu is from a litter that had two sires.

You remember correctly- the older dog only produced two out of the eight puppies in the litter.......
The DNA testing does seem to take a little while though....................

I'm really not sure if using two dogs was intentional or not but that's the way it is :/ Anyway I have already paid the deposit so no turning back now.

When the pups are 6 weeks old they are all getting DNA tested and once the results for the sire is in then papers will be applied for. The breeder did say they might take a while but that I would get them, although the pet dogs will only be on limited register papers anyway. Honestly, the papers do not concern me too much.

As for bi-blacks in Australia they are certainly not common but they are out there. When searching for a breeder there was one in Sydney that actually had a litter of bi-blacks available at the time but I wasn't ready for a pup so not a good match. Actually I had an easier time finding a bi-black than I did a blue merle. But that was probably just timing as most of the breeders with blues weren't breeding any at that point in time.

I've seen probably as many bi-blacks as merles. It's uncommon to see them in the show ring though as they don't do well, in the show ring it's mostly golden sable, tri and shaded sable. So I guess for a show breeder it isn't worthwhile to breed bi-black except to other colours. I've been at a show this weekend with a lot of NSW breeders - quite a few tris and sables but not a single merle or bi in the lot. Not sure why we don't see many merles - in the Collie ring they do well.

I remember a couple of years ago one of the members here was being offered a puppy from a sire that had supposedly been whisked off to Australia to be the first bi-black in the country. Now that was dodgy.

Oh ok, so they are out there. It makes sense that breeders are not as inclined to breed them because they don't do well in the show-ring. I'm not involved in the show world at all so I didn't know that... so interesting. Strange that merle collies do well but shelties don't.

I think merles are an acquired taste -- we loved a blue merle aussie for 10 years so merles are dear to us. When showing pix of the merle I was considering, I had 4 separate friends NOT like the dog. Once I picked a sable, those same 4 friends are thrilled and my mom has already printed a pic to put on the shelf with my other two dogs. Merle patterns can be striking or just flat-out strange and off-putting, I think. Maybe it takes awhile to mentally accept the different and nonexpected colors.

In any case, they are all wonderful and it's the heart and soul of a dog that really matters.

I'm with you in that. Merle's can be really disconcerting sometimes! I find Callan's blue eyes weird sometimes, though most people seem to love them! They are so piercing and cold looking....compared to a sables melting brown eyes

It's here, it's here! My copy of The Art of Raising a Puppy has just arrived. Time for some reading :smile2:

And 51 days to go until puppy pickup.

So I finished reading my copy of The Art of Raising a Puppy. Actually I finished reading it 2 days after I got it :pop I will have to re-read it 2 weeks before I pickup pup and make notes on it so it's fresh in my mind!

I just got a massive package of puppy stuff delivered today! So exciting.

What I got today: medium crate, crate divider, crate bed, waterproof crate cover, clip on bowl for crate, 2 regular bowls, a puppy kong and a 50 foot training lead!

What I already have: slip lead, regular lead, car harness.

What I've ordered but haven't received yet: nylon puppy collar (until he/she grows up a bit), 2 clicker trainers (one also doubles as a whistle)!

What I still need to order: ID tag, collapsible travel bowl, 3 fleece blankets, a pin brush, a slicker brush, a comb, nail clippers, scissors, a razor or trimmer perhaps for any fur trimming, spray bottle, shampoo, toys, wormer and revolution, and of course the food!

Did I forget anything? :fl LOL

No wonder I'm almost poor :/
