In the path of hurricane Irene:Owners, dogs, your location

My parents in central NJ just got their power back. It's been out since Saturday night.

This is good to hear. My in-laws are in Central NJ, Spring Lake area. Hopefully they got their power back also, but there were reports of a fire at a local sub-station so who knows. We'll have to call them tonight.

They lost a huge tree that was to the left of the house (if you were facing the house). Thankfully it fell sideways across front yards and didn't damage either their home or their neighbor's home.

I hope everyone is back in their homes, and if they aren't yet they will be soon. Property can be fixed/replaced; you and your dogs cannot and, I'm sure I can safely say, we are all very glad everyone is safe.

All in all, this storm has turned out much better than original expectations, but I'm very glad that officials were on the side of caution and had people prepare. So far seems like everyone has stayed safe.

Glad it wasn't bad for you. It was very bad for NJ. Just go to www.nj.com and you can see how bad it was for us. Consider yourself VERY lucky. There are people stuck in a hotel in Parsippany that is collapsing as we speak. Sixty people that are trapped on the top floor. So scary.

I belong to a group of women on the internet and they complained and complained about the coverage of the hurricane and that the weather channel was disappionted it was not bigger when it made land fall. They did not like the hype put on it.
I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on this subject? We get the weather men playing them up as they form but have learned that you can listen and be cautious. I realized after the turn of Charley that you can never be to safe or complancent. You just never know with mother nature and what she will throw at you. Look at Vermont.

We just went through a really bad session last week with tornado watches/warnings out and many people complained about the "unnecessary hype". I went through the F4 tornado in Barrie in 1985 before there were warnings like we have now.

With respect tornadoes and hurricanes, I would rather the watches/warnings be overstated than understated. I would rather have time to prepare for something that doesn't happen/isn't as bad as they expect that not to be warned.

Thank GOD that there was coverage and warning. I could not even imagine if we weren't prepared for this. Things are not good here in NJ right now.

My opinion of the whiners is that they are self absorbed and need to look outside their glass houses. People can be just down right SELFISH.

Here is a FB page to like. It is starting to list all the dogs that need to be reunited with their owners.

I am glad to hear that the tree did not damage their home. They are very lucky, as it sounds like that area has some pretty hefty damage. So sad.

My parents live near Toms River, so they're a little more south than your in-laws. I'm glad the tree missed their house and I hope they have power soon.

Maybe we can have a little meet up next time you visit your in-laws. :smile2:

From what I've been reading, Central and North Jersey got the brunt of it whereas Cape May, Wildwood, and the other southern shore points got, more or less, a typical nor-easter.

I was looking at the site you linked to, www.nj.com, and found a picture of Spring Lake's twisted boardwalk. :( I love walking on there, and the beach, with the dogs during the off season when it's permitted. South end is usually were we are when I take the beach pictures of the dogs.

In the grand scheme of things, better a boardwalk than lives. My heart goes out to those families who lost loved ones in this storm.

I'd LOVE that. I know we are going to make every effort to be in Thanksgiving weekend; I'm not sure about before that. My in-laws are coming to visit us this weekend. (We weren't sure until a few days ago if we were going East or they were coming West.)

Here is a picture of my friend's backyard. Where they usually have NO water. Just to put this in perspective.

The pictures I have been seeing today on tv are just devastating and yes they do put things in perspective and I know from having been through the fringes of Charley that was 12 miles from us that pictures don't do the actual damage justice. My heart goes out to all of those with damage and the familes that lost loved ones.
