I'd suggest the same thing, leave internet explorer. I can't speak for chrome but I know firefox has add ons specifically for blocking advertising.
I personally use firefox and have all advertising on all web sites blocked.
It all boils down to the fact that Internet Explorer simply has inferior protection from adware/malware and phishing. You're pretty much leaving your computer open to be attacked if you're using Internet Explorer. I keep thinking Microsoft will improve it but they never do, they only add useless bells and whistles.
But for those who still don't want to leave Internet Explorer, the only way to reduce the ads is by buying a Premium Membership and ignoring the few ads that you still see and to make sure your computer is protected properly by antivirus/antimalware software.
Malwarebytes is good, free software for removing malware that can infect your computer with malicious ads and viruses.
Very well said, Melissa! The only thing I could personally add is that I too use Mozilla Firefox and do have EVERY ad blocked so I never miss-click or see any popups and ads. So this isn't a problem for me. If it is for you, I too would suggest leaving Internet Explorer and using a browser that allows you to download add-ons, like Ad Blocker, etc to use. I haven't seen a single ad in years on any of my computers sine and I love it. And no it doesn't put a big eye distracting X or anything like that where the ads are suppose to be, the ad space simply disappears all together and is removed.
