Lifting leg? Male dogs...

Koffoy started to lift his leg around 9mths but then once we where out in a bad windstorm and he lifted his leg and the wind blew him right over. Poor thing was scared to lift his leg again. He is now a year and a half and is starting to occasionally lift his leg again. But if it is the least bit windy, all four paws are on the ground and then he has a stance unlike anything I can describe, but he doesn't get anything on himself.

Never heard, nor seen the chatter jaw. Interesting.

Miko lifts his leg to pee. When I got Koji, strangely enough, he never did it. Koji does a squat. Not like a girl squat, but where he lowers his back end a bit straight down (not curled under like a girl or if he has to poop). No clue where he learned that. He still does that, 6 years later.

However, both my boys are neutered and neither mark.

I recall a thread about this. It seems as though it's random. Not always learned. Sometimes it's a dominance thing. I remember one person saying when the more dominant dog passed, the dog who used to squat, now lifted his leg. I have no clue.

One suggestion is to cut the hair around his privates. That's what I did. Trim the fur above, so when he'd go, it wouldn't hit that hair. OR I'd let the fur ON his privates grow long, so that when he'd go, it'd dribble down that....to the ground, instead of straight forward, onto his tummy area.

My pup learned the chatter jaw after being in agility class with his sister who was in heat :rolleyes2:
He is almost 9 months now, and I'd say he started lifting his leg a couple months ago, but really learned to mark about a month ago. It's funny, though, if he REALLY actually has to pee he does a squat like you describe-nothing like a girl, kind of parked out like a saddlebred with his butt lowered. Otherwise, he's a marking, leg lifting machine :rolleyes2: I don't mind, unless he tries to do it in class or in the house!

That is the one to avoid  my 13 yr old sheltie back in PA marks our furniture if you don't watch him... so does the yorkie though.

Na, Deska has his nose up the cats' butts all the time (both female) - and they are fixed. He tries it on Tully to but she bites his nose and growls at him - he'll still make the attempt though. I think boys just have a fascination with butts! Oh and dogs too...:wink2:
 those men and butts!

Laddie is almost 10 months old now, and shows no sign of lifting his leg to pee, he squats like he did when we first bought him.

That is how Hanna pees - low to the ground, very straight back and legs wide apart. She only does the curled back thing to poop.

Never had a shelties do the lip chatter thing, but all my cats did it, at flies on the windows or when we lived in the condo and the pine tree just outside the window was full of birds.
