Question regarding Abby....

I need breed specific help.....Abby has 95% of the time what appears to me to be an excessive amount of heat radiating from her back. The vets and Tuft's say this is "normal" with moving parts in a dog, expecially a high energy sheltie. Abby is not high energy as she is as mellow as an 8 year old. This is where I need your help please.
Will you please part your dogs hair away from their spine and feel the temperature between the shoulder blades and down to the middle of their back and let me know whether it is warm, hot or you just notice nothing. I need as much feed back as I can get as this will help to steer me in the right direction once again for Abby. Perhaps a back/spine MRI?

Heat is a pain indicator. If the whole back is a consistent temperature, I wouldn't worry about it. If one section is hotter than others, that is a pain spot. Chiropractic is the best option for relieving spine related pain. Acupuncture also works well for some dogs. Dogs will also tend to twitch when you hit that pain spot. Marque just got adjusted at our agility trial, and when she hit one spot in his back that was out, he actually made a face. I'm not sure anyone but me would have seen it, but it was a distinct "ouch" face.

Anything requiring and MRI would be so severe you would already know about it. Don't waste your money there.

Yes, she does have the twitchspot where it is warm. It is also warm from shoulder blades to trhe middle of her back. Last time she got an adjustment Abby yelped ... and I almost went through the roof.

Ellie feels the same temperature along her back as the rest of her. She is just come from outside where it is cool and she is cool to the touch everywhere. I don't know if this helps you or not.
 
I know you're nervous about your girl, but you have to give us a chance to get to our computers..lol

My thought is if you suspect an "ouch spot," maybe take her back for another evaluation/another opinion...or for possibly another adjustment... You may want to massage her too and see if she shows any reactions?

Does she try to scratch at that spot? Many times when a pupper has pain...they'll nibble or scratch at it. Being it's her shoulder area..she can't reach it to nibble.

I just checked 2 of our 3 for warm spots where you indicated and they both feel fine..nothing noticeable there.

You know your girl best and if you suspect something isn't "right," I'd pursue it for ease of mind if nothing else ;-).

Thank all of you for your responses... this is exactly what I needed to hear. So far no warmth on others which means the vets are not correct and my gut is. I will try to get a chiropractic appointment made asap. Please keep checking and posting so I will be 100% correct.

Snap is warm from his shoulder blades down the entire back. Feels like a pretty even temp to me.

The twitching that you describe in Abby must be a muscle spasm. I don't know how often you have her worked on, but it sounds like she may due for something. Following the worst reactions to palpation that Snap has had, often the vet will do both an adjustment and acupuncture. Snap gets off the table like a new man.

Are you keeping up massage with her ?
