Sadie is suddenly paralyzed

your report sounds as she regained some portion of her movement already. she was not able to move at all initially? Being able to stand is a great deal to achieve.

I hope you get some answers from your vet. I wouldn't hesitate to ask why they didn't think of the steroids. Also, you should ask about x-rays. There may be a reason why Sadie's situation is different. Or, it may be that they didn't think of it, in which case you may want to consult a different vet for another opinion.

Also, I know you are getting ready to go on vacation. I would recommend that you locate a vet, AND an emergency vet near the place that you're staying. Better to have it ready ahead of time in case something happens. You can also get a copy of Sadie's vet records before you leave. I did that with Lexi when she was getting sick just in case. That way if you do need to get her to another vet, you have all the stuff that they have already done. Saves some time and possibly some money to avoid double testing, etc...

I plan to ask my vet why they didn't react the way I would have thought they would.

When I left Sadie I gave them permission to do x-rays, take blood and do whatever else they needed to. The emerg vet specifically said that x-rays wouldn't help for some reason :confused2:

Getting caught up with this post and wishing Sadie the best and sending you a big hug Melissa, I am sure you could use a few right now. How has Ginny been with all this with Sadie? I am sure she is so scared and I am sure it just tore your heart out to leave her at the vets. Hope you hear some thing soon.
 
I wonder to why they did not give him steroids and I agree with Ashley would be good to know of a vet closet to your vacation just to know excatly where they are located.
 
Free advice (so you can ignore it for zero cost):

Don't go in with a why did you not do this like I read on the interwebz and hurt my pup tone/attitude. Instead coach it as I was wondering if there was a reason for ______ You are much more likely to get good answers and to not put the vet in worry mode about you since you want his worries to be 100% Sadie I am sure. Discussion not challenge and it will likely yield the largest benefits for Sadie IMO

It is my understanding that she went to an emergency vet last night, but is now at her usual vet. So I am sure she is in good hands where she is at right now, and they were not the ones that originally saw Sadie.
 
Great idea Ashley to research vets ahead of time. That's what I love about this site when we're upset about our babies we can't think of everything and with everybody's input we can really come up with some great ideas to make life easier for our babies.
 
I spoke to my regular vet, who did x-rays and blood work, both of which came back normal.

Sadie's been given prednisone, which is good for neurological conditions and a muscle relaxant for her front legs, neck and back which seem to be stuck in a state of spasm.

Thankfully, the vet said that she doesn't appear to have lost her bladder or bowel function. I can't say how grateful I am that I don't have to worry about that.

My vet said that we can still take her on vacation, so long as I keep Sadie very quiet and away from the other dogs. Since we don't know exactly what's wrong with her, I'm to exercise her as little as possible, with the exception of swimming in her life jacket.

Sadie is spending the night at the vets and they'll be keeping an eye on her all of tomorrow. As far as I know she'll be coming home tomorrow night.

I THINK she's shown some slight improvement. Despite her one leg not working much at all and her super tight muscles, she spent the day standing in her kennel at the vets.

My mother found this neat thing on clearance at The Bay in the baby section. Its for babies learning to walk and its a round, paded tube that wrapes around the baby and has a snap in the back. It has handles that you hold above the baby. It should work perfectly for Sadie and I'm hoping she won't be bothered by it when I bring her out to go potty.

I'm trying to suck it up and pull myself back together for her return tomorrow. It was pointed out to my by a couple of good friends that I need to be strong and positive for her, just like with a person. Sadie is just as sensitive and knows when I'm upset.

I'm just praying that she'll recover enough that she can still do all of her favorite things.
