Timid rescue sheltie

aaww, what great news. It actually brought a tear to my eye. How great his progress is. It is so moving to hear a little dog who had a bad start is now getting some pleasure. I esp loved that he slept next to you, and he has a little cat friend.

Hi again everyone,

Apollo has gone twice today, he went reasonably quickly this morning, this afternoon he was a bit slower, but he also did a lot of playing in the snow, which I was very happy to see. Dakota used to love snow and eating snow, putting his face in snow, etc. This guy was having a good time as well. Also played with the cat a bit, they had some fun together outside. Seemed like he might be gaining a little confidence as he initiated some of the play with Othello (the cat.)

He's making progress slowly but surely. I let him stay out of the crate last night, and he slept beside me in bed. He was very good all night.

I'll try to get some more pictures up soon. I should have saved the ones from the website before it got taken down! He is somewhat of a sad sight though with his short haircut, thought the other pictures it wasn't too noticeable. Can't wait for it to all grow back and see him with a nice full coat!

Thanks!!

That's wonderful! Sounds like he's adjusting fast. It's only been a few days and he's sleeping in your bed. Awww he's going to have a wonderful life now.

Looks like Apollo is settling in quite well. I am so happy he had fun playing in the snow. He loves and trusts you to sleep next to you like that. So cool/ and it did not take him that long. Glad he had fun with the cat, too. GREAT NEWS!

Just wanted to check in here...

Apollo is doing...about the same really. He can still be difficult to get to go to the bathroom, but it's mostly been better. A few times he's gone very quickly, but a couple times not at all. But making progress.

He doesn't like to eat unless he's either shut in the crate with his food, or if I repeatedly stick the food close to his face and hold it there...but he won't eat it if he's alone in the room with it even. I've managed to get him to take a few bites with it on the floor beside me, and that is hard...even with canned dog food mixed in. Getting him to drink is difficult. I need to try broth, but ice cubes don't seem to help. He gets most of his water right now by eating snow...and he loves to do that.

He still doesn't like to wander far away while inside. He's kind of like my girlfriend...very needy. (said with love) Haha. Speaking of which, yes, I am a male, so I'm his "daddy." ;)

He has two rope toys, a squeek toy, and some rawhide chews. He isn't interested in any of them. :( Also, I've yet to hear him bark. His tail is almost always tucked between his legs. Hopefully with more time he'll loosen up.

Overall though, he seems happy...just needs more time. I hope he's feeling more playful by spring. I'm looking forward to warmer weather and doing some running around outside.

Glad to hear that he's doing better! Poor little guy...

You know, he'd probably really benefit from either a puppy class or a basic obedience class. I say puppy class because he's so fearful and unsure of his surroundings, puppies are less intimidating to shy dogs. I took a puppy class with Milo, my parent's sheltie who was very shy of dogs.

In addition to helping him cope with new situations, and obedience class would help him learn to trust you and bond with you as well as really build his confidence.

Regarding the still not going potty some of the time. Is there a possiblity he might have a urinary infection, so it hurts to go? Thank you again for adopting Apollo and giving him the love and life he so much deserves. Please continue to keep us posted.
