Timid rescue sheltie

I had to teach Tully to play with toys, altho often solo dogs wont play with toys by themself anyway. I will find the post I did a while ago on how the behaviourist said to get a dog interested in toys (I did write it down in a notebook, but heaven knows where that is now)

He ha - hes a sheltie, he will never want to leave your side, esp in the house. If I try to go to another room without my dogs Deska howls like its the end of the world!

Be glad you have a sheltie that doesnt want to constantly eat or bark! Or at least while it lasts - once he gets his confidence his bound to get his appetite, and voice.
 
congrats on your new sheltie! Give Apollo lots of love and time and he'll come around.

That sounds helpful, thanks! And yes, I remember Dakota when he was a puppy didn't bark for so long that I thought there was something wrong with him. That all changed quickly enough. He was a talker. :)

I'll try to take some soon, but right now he's usually running back and forth so much it's hard to get a good picture, at least with my phone. And I keep forgetting my real camera at work. He has a small bare spot on his muzzle that isn't visible in the photo. Hoping it grows back, but I don't think it will. It's OK though, not really a big deal. He's still a handsome little fellow...though the rest of his fur needs to hurry and grow back. I think he's a little cold outside!

I'd still be concerned about his lack of water. Unfortunately, snow is not a great substitute for water - you have to eat TONS of it to get the same amount. Since he apparently likes it cold, trying putting ice cubes in his water, and maybe he'll drink more.

But it sounds like progress is being made. Best of luck!
 
Well, here I am again with an update of sorts.

Apollo is doing...better I suppose. It seems like very slow progress, and sometimes like no progress. I'm sure though that if I jumped here from 2 or so weeks ago that it would seem like a bigger difference.

He still won't eat or drink if the food is just left out on the floor. It has to be up on the couch, or I have to be down on the floor, or he has to be shut in his crate with it.

He's been going to the bathroom pretty well. He goes #1 within seconds of going outside usually. And if he doesn't go #2 within 5-10 minutes I can usually assume he just doesn't need to go, and he'll go the next time. Good progress here, which was nice today, as it's very cold out this morning.

Apollo has been *slightly* more adventurous in the house. In the kitchen he'll pace around while my brother and I are in there. Or he'll just run back to the couch, or go upstairs (to the bedroom.) Still, compared to before when he always had to be under foot, or behind the legs, it's progress.

He hasn't wanted to play still. But he's come close to chewing on his rope bone. He nibbled it for a second a couple times. At least showing some amount of interest. Last night we had lamb, and I let him chew on the bone for awhile. At first he was pretty nervous, but he eventually let himself enjoy it for the most part and chewed away. Then he drank his water on the floor by himself (I was on the couch above him.) Again, a small step, but a step none the less.

Still no barking though. He's a quiet little fellow.

His fur is still...not great. Some of it I can tell has grown a little bit, but other spots don't seem to have grown much. I hope it all grows in:uhoh:

It seems like such baby steps, but your love and support will see him through. Progress is progress! You are a good mom!
 
Sounds like the poor dog has been thru a lot and you seem to be doing great with him. As for the #2 ... my pup still hasnt got the full grasp of pooing outside .. he will pee all the time outside but havent got him to go poo consistently outside.

I think you are doing an excellent job with him .. he is lucky !!!!
 
That really does sound like progress. Keep posting the good news.

I was looking back at my posts from a year ago, and found a post saying Tully finally went up to sniff another dog and sat next to a ridgeback. Doesnt sound like much but I was very excited at the time - it was a big step. People who meet Tully now hardly believe she was that shy, and now its easy for me to forget just how much progress we have made. Thats why its nice to look back on earlier posts to remember. At one point I didnt think we would ever progress.

Keep going. One day soon you will look back on this period with pride on what a great job you have done.
