Trick Challenge #1-March to the Music

Trick Challenge

In Next months Trick Challenge I would like to throw in a prize for best trick.I would give a Fluggle slip lead wich can also be used as a tug.Any one interested?

I'm going to be the late starter with this one as Epic's tummy troubles lasted a while and only really resolved over the last couple of days. He's been OK but I've not wanted to risk upsetting the balance with a treat overload.

However, I've been VERY much enjoying watching all your vids and hearing your experiences and tips so will have some idea on how to get this moving now. Epic is the most naturally 'pawy' dog of the three, so I'm hoping this will help - along with the enthusiasm of youth and greed!

The discussions about methods are fascinating - I'd never heard of linear clicker training before but that's what I've been doing!

Going to begin the training tomorrow...

I loved the video of Romeo and Juliet, especially when Juliet grabs hold with both feet - cute:wink2:

Merlin is looking an exceptionally handsome young man! I met a half brother of his yesterday:smile2: I see you have him and Cadbury doing it from a sit - does the 'stand' part come later or it that just the way they naturally preferred to do it?

Sharon, I think giving away prizes would have to be a mod decision, I don't know what the forum rules say? Perhaps a mod will see this and advise?

Julia, who was the half brother?

Glad to hear Epic is getting going. Yes, I've started in sit for simplicity and then moving to stand, actually Merlin has switched to a stand automatically.

I've just got them both up to doing a 'right, left' step before clicking, I only perhaps get to train twice a week, so don't feel you are behind!

We had to babysit Ellie's BFF, Ginger the Wonder Pug for five days, so we had trouble getting in training. However, when Ginger left yesterday Ellie and I did a session and she was 100%. HOWEVER, I got the #ell scraped out of my poor bare legs! I won't be doing THAT again! Tonight we will start progressing where hopefully I can teach her to touch my foot (she has been touching my hand for "high five").

I hope one of the tricks we do is "back up" because Ellie is an expert!

Epic session one:

Really pleased with our first session. I put a treat under my foot to get the interest and very quickly he tried pawing and my foot. Clicked for every paw as soon as it happened (didn't want it turning into a clawing behaviour). When it looked as if he had the idea I removed the treat and rewarded for every paw touch. He quickly got that so I alternated feet and all was going well. Finished the session with marking for every paw to a foot raised about an inch from the ground.

Expecting a plateau tomorrow though:wink2:

We were doing really well. Up to 4-6 marches with him touching my shin. Trying to get him to lift his foot when I raise mine and not tocuh me. Works about 2 or 3 times in a row and then he gets stuck. Seem to have hit that learning plateau here.

I am sure we will break though soon.:smile2:

I've been a bit out of practice myself as I played some serious volleyball with some friends and injured BOTH of my wrists! Anyways, they are better now--just in time for us to progress to feet and have the dogs scratch up my legs :)

Here's our progress as of tonight.

Lexi
Bentley

I'm really pleased with them (despite the scratched up legs!) I'd like a few more days of practice with correct foot to correct paw (and for Lexi more time without her trying to use both paws) and then I might try to do a bit more layering of tricks (one foot, second foot treat, etc...)

Oh you brave souls doing this in socks/bare feet!!

Epic Session Two:

He remembered yesterday's practice and picked up really quickly where we left off. Managed to lift my feet quite high and he's always going for the raised foot. So far so good. Now how soon should I start moving this on and looking to mark for corect foot touches as opposed to any foot touches? I think that will be the plateau:confused2:

Might try it later with Yogi and possibly Revel - he dosn't like being left out:wink2:

I did not have much time these past days to comment on this thread but I read it a few times already to refresh some of the tips I missed.

You guys are all doing great! It's fun to look at everyone's progress and the different difficulties each dog encounter.

Here's a video of parts of today's session with Kyara. I guess this is our 4th or 5th session. I asked her to stay seated this time as she was very bouncy when in a stand. Today I wanted to add distance and keep her in one place. Since I was making 2 criteria more difficult, I lowered the number of paw lifts for a click to 2 (she was giving me at least 4 to 5 paw lifts when she was touching my feet and standing during our last session).

Upon watching this video, I realised I almost never praised her verbally! I only clicked and treated except on a few occasions when I threw in a ''good girl''. No wonder she was getting distracted and bored! :rolleyes2: It's really helpful to edit a video of when I am training her as I can spot things I need to improve.

Did I mention I am really enjoying this trick of the month challenge idea? :wink2: Such a fun idea, thank you Sophie for organizing this. :smile2:

I am the same way. I realized I wasn't praising verbally either which is weird because when I train without a clicker, my praise is a big part of my rewards. I started talking and he stayed more focused. I think part of it is because with clicker training you usually shut up and wait for behavior but really I don;t think it needs to carry over to reinforcment.

I am also loving this trick challenage. A much needed break to the other regular training. I remember every couple days.
