Been Feeding PuPPY food--Now dog is 3 years old- need best adult food in market

I found this thread to be very interesting,thank you.I actually wrote down the proportion mixes,just for future referance.I have always done the same,but just never measured.

We switched Earnhardt now going on a month ago to Nutro Ultra.And we are beyond pleased with the change in his coat.Absolutely no shedding we are down to.Obviously was lacking something. Trapp will also be eating the Nutro (puppy) when he comes home.
 
I use Orijen, and several other people on the forum do as well. They don't sell it where I live so I order mine online. I only have one dog, and so a larger size bag lasts me forever. Here's a link (with a picture):

That site is where I order a lot of my dog stuff from. It usually takes about a week and a half for me to get my stuff. So don't order from there if you are in a hurry. :lol: Orijen does not make my dog's teeth funky, either. After using that food for a while I noticed that his coat felt NICE. What you feed really does make a difference. I was using Wellness, but Wellness was causing bathroom problems, so I stopped using it. Orijen did not cause stomach problems in my dog.


I'm finding that even the Old Mother Hubbard dog treats (Old Mother Hubbard - same company as Wellness) also made my dog have funky bathroom problems. It's not fun to clean up. At all.

I looked over the site as soon as you mentioned the brand and it doesn't sem any better to me than what I'm feeding. I think I'm going to be at maybe $30something a month for two dogs (Pierre only eats 1/2 a cup a day plus training treats). I don't really know yet because I'm not fully switched over (I'm two weeks in - Duncan took to it so well, he is but Pierre is not) and I've only had two dogs for two weeks.

Why not get one of the premium (not ultra-premium) brands and feed that one meal and do raw the other? I think if you prepare it frozen and put it in the refrigerator to thaw over night, it wouldn't be so messy. I'm considering doing something similar (or maybe every few days) as well as using a high quality supplement. Altogether - I doubt I'll be at the amount you are.

Also - have you considered shipping? I looked for stores that have the food near me and I have a few, but depending on where you are - they may not carry it. Shipping from a boutique (or worse - New Zealand where it is made) could be expensive.

and As far as the Raw food is concerned, i heard so many good things about them but it might be too messy and too much work. and i saw some Raw food from Mail order place like Raw Buffolo meat with bone, Raw chicken with bones etc,,,, and they are fairly expensive...
and what if the Dog eventually wants to eat you ??? if you keep giving it raw food ???? LOL:lol:

I agree with Barb, I think the sales rep has fed you a line and you grabbed it hook, line and sinker ! There is no kibble that is like fresh out of the wild. Unless you feed Raw ! If you really want to be certain it's top quality and not processed than I suggest you do the raw diet or follow some recipies which are fairly easy to find online now !! There is a whole section under feeding and nutrition on this forum that deals with feeding top quality versus Raw. My Kia get home cooked food as well as Merricks kibble . She loves yogurt, Cottage cheese, Beef liver, chicken livers, I cook her liver in a beef base and add veggies and she'll gobble it up. Liver has all the vitamins and nutrients needed. Talked to the Ziwipeak rep again. and This food is Not Kibble, they are telling me. It is not raw food either, but very close to it. It is Air-dried finished and not Processed or oven dried. they are telling me this is the closest thing to Raw food without actually being a raw food......:confused2:
 
It's your money and your dog, but I doubt I would feed a food that expensive unless it was to correct a life threatening health condition.

Phebe is on TOTW buffalo and venision and doing very well. I don't feed RAW but am very interested in the topic, and may yet decide to go that route because of the health benefits, especially the dental benefits of bone in a RAW diet. If a rep was trying to talk me into a food because it's 'almost' RAW, but it didn't include the bone benefits of RAW, it would be a 'no-go' for me.

Kind of what I was thinking. Isn't any kibble that's mostly protein/high in protein without bone "almost raw"? :rolleyes2: It would probably be less to actually go raw.
 
I agree...if it's "that close to raw" why not feed raw, which is probably cheaper? Mine get Eagle Pack Holistic and a food called Now for my show girl which is grain free and chock full of really good stuff. Neither are super high protein food since my vet thinks those can impact their kidneys long term. But I've had really good luck with top quality kibble.

Those are very pretty Shelties you have in your avatar. Anyway, i bought a Small bag of ZeeWeepeak and 1 trial size bag of Arcana and Orijen. I am gonna try all 3 foods and see which works the best. :smile2:
