Cody has a shoulder injury

Praying for good results, and that the vet comes up with an answer to Cody's problem.

Please continue to update us. Thanks.

All of Cody's blood tests came back normal. No Lyme disease, luekemia, anemia and thyroid is normal. Dr. Smith feels it must be a soft tissue injury that wasn't detected in the radiographs.

Another 6 wks of Rimadyl, no exericse for 2 more weeks, then light exercise the following 2 wks. The next 2 weeks, gradually increase his exercise and monitor him. His Rimadyl was increased to 75 mg 2x a day (actually 37 1/2 mg. I cut the pill in half) on Nov. 10th and I can see an improvement. Fingers are crossed he will be healed then:uhoh:

I'm glad you finally know it isn't lymes or any issue like that. I guess the tough part will be to continue keeping him quiet and i know that's been tough for you both. Praying lots of rest and meds will finally allow him to heal. Hugs from Gypsy and I.

such good news

Sheltiemom4 thank you for posting the good results. I know that doesn't help with Cody's antsy pants but I know you must be so relieved.

I was curious, you had originally said that the first vet told you that it was a shouldar injury. Then Doctor Smith tested and found two injured puppy ankles. So it never was the shouldar injury, just the ankles?

Everytime that Harper Lee bounds with joy I think of all the joy that is yet to come back to Cody and how happy that day will make you.

Best,
Kate

I'm sorry....I should have clarified that and Dr. Smith did mention it again tonight. The ankle trauma is healed and he felt if was from previous injury or sprain or he was born with it. Dr. Smith stated he also agreed the injury is in his shoulder. He even questioned it when the results came back NOT showing anything in the shoulder.

And yes, I will be VERY happy the day he can run again. I have to admit that I'm somewhat nervous about letting him loose in the yard. When he sees a squirrel......IT'S CRAZY TIME!!!!!! (I wonder if I can somehow get them to move to another tree!!)

Maybe a constant supply of peanuts would do the trick. Located in the area you prefer they go of course.

I was just thinking. Did he check for lateral shoulder instability. It is an injury that would not show up on radiographs. I learned about it during a sports dog medicine CE and had not really known of it prior. It is like a rotator cuff injury in people. In dogs, we see it in agility dogs most fequently but could be found in any active dog. Just a thought. I hope it is just a simple soft tissue injury.

Squirrels

Gee I don't know Sheltiemom4, Ohio squirrels can be cagey and very sneaky when it comes to teasing shelties!! they take their squirrel duties just as seriously as shelties take theirs.

Have you tried reasoning with them?:biggrin2:

I'm not sure if he did or not. He did mention he checked "range of motion" and and the techinician stated he was uncomfortable when they were doing the radiographs because they moved the leg in several different positions.

If the lameness re-ocurrs after all his meds are done, he stated he will refer me to an orthopedic vet.

THANK YOU for the advice. I will definitely check into that if needed!!

Well.........As of today, Cody has taken all the Rimadyl prescribed and I'm sad to say he's not healed as of yet. Everything was going well up until it was time to increase his activity to running loose and the very 1st time I let him out he came in limping. I stayed out with him to observe and I didn't see anything traumatic such as tripping or falling. Within maybe 2 minutes he showed signs of discomfort and I brought him in immediately. He hasn't been out since. I'm SOOOOO discouraged.

I don't know whether to just leash walk permanently (which I hate to do) or just "bite the bullet" and see an orthopedic vet. I have over $1000 invested so far, and he's not pain free. I TRULY LOVE MY DOGS and want the best for them, but, I can't really afford this.............
