Is there a "Sheltie" collar?

I have martingales for my girls as well for when we leave the house. The rest of the time they wear rolled leather collars.

Barb, I'm not sure what is going on but would you please PM Sheltie4life. I don't want this to go the wrong way and I think it would be best if the two of you discussed it in private. I think it's the best solution to get your answers. Thanks!

You are correct..I should have PM'd directly. But I was taken aback by the response and just felt like I needed to be on public record. There was no discussion here. Just me spouting about those collrs again. Mea Culpa!

Poor Deska had his mane shaved by a groomer once and it took 9months to grow back to the same length as the rest, and yep - it looked really silly (even more silly than the scarf I made him wear for the first couple of months)!

I use martingales on Tully and a harness on Deska. Deska has worked out how to slip out of martingales when I tie him up at training (he backs out of them) and as he chases cars I feel a lot safer with him in a harness. At training he wears a limited slip collar and sometimes I use it on walks too.
 
Smudge is just wearing a plain blue Wal-Mart collar until he "grows up". Then he's getting a custom made collar. :biggrin2: My last sheltie, Gizmo :sadsmile:, wore a plain jane collar his whole life and it completely ruined his ruff. So you might want to be on the lookout for that. I'm hoping one of these custom collars will be well hidden and work nice.

Speaking of harnesses, I'm going to try one of those "step in" ones. Everytime I bend down Smudge thinks it's a game and would rather play instead. So I think maybe this will be easier. :yes:

I too use the one from petsmart on all mine. Works really well and its cheap!:winkgrin:
I dont leave a collar on any dogs when im not there, and definatly I dont keep an collars on the adult dogs because it does ruin their ruff and mats it down. They only wear a collar when they leave the house and thats it.
 
There seem to be two style of martingale collars.

The first, as shown from Petsmart, and the second with a small chain for the tightening loop.

I went with the chain version for Ariel. My reasoning was that the chain one would be smoother and quicker, both for tightening and release. Also with the chain being heavier, it always falls to the front so I know exactly where to grab if I have to get ahold of her quickly. That said, she doesn't wear the martingale in the house, only when I take her outside.

I too, prefer the chain for exactly the same reason. It does not need to be a heavy chain (for my guys its 1/4") but it still always falls to the front. So I always know where to grab.

Fit is key. You want it to be loose enough so that if it were ever to get caught on something, they can slip out, but tight enough so that when you attach a lead to the chain, or grap the chain, it will tighten enough that they can't slip out.

In hindsight, I probably erred too much on the loose side. If I was to do it again, I probably would have made the collars 1/2" tighter.
 
Barb, If I'm reading right it sounds like yours is not adjustable.

I bought a very inexpensive one from Jefferspet. The collar part is just like a nylon collar with an adjustable buckle so I've got leeway for fit. I got it on special and I don't see my exact one on their website. These look like it except they're patterned and mine is black:

I wasn't sure if it was what I wanted when I ordered so that's why I bought a cheap one. It works great!
