Puppy Picking

in AKC, dogs 14 and under jump 12. usually, you cannot start the guessing of height and weight until 8 weeks and up based off of the height chart, but some breeders can tell you a little better. Like, the one I am getting, the breeder already knows he'll be big, but, his mom is big so that's how she can also tell that. Even though she thinks that though does not mean it is going to happen. Some dogs grow fast and level out, some grow steady until they're a year or so.

So you are waiting on a baby too? Cool! When do you get to bring yours home? I have three weeks to go...should be totally crazy by then LOL

I always laugh when I think of Everett and him ever doing agility-- If there was ever a Sheltie that wasn't ever built for agility its him. His weight is between 16-22 at his heaviest, but he has a deep chest and stubby legs. his ability to jump is very limited.
His attitude is so laid back, that he really doesn't get excited-- to get him to run thru tubes and over obstacles.. well he would just stare at you with a blank expression..
We chose the runt. but we got a non agility love.

Trying to predict sheltie height will drive you crazy.

Birch was looking insize on the charts at 8wks but by 10 wks he was looking like he was going over. He went back and forth for a while and then took off and was over sized by 7 months, he slowly creeped after that stopped around 10 months. His Brother Leo, was safe at 10 wks and grew slowly was still good at 10 months and continue to creep and at 14 months went over. He was still creeping when he was placed with Irene. Before boys are around 17" Their parents are 15 1/4" and 14 1/2"

Then there was Ember. She was looking to be about 14.5 to 15"" on the charts at 9 weeks. She grew normally until she hit 6 months and never grew another tenth. She is just 13". Both her parents were 16"

Diva, I was sweating the whole time she was growing up. I wanted under 14" but I just knew she was going to be 14 1/8 just to make me crazy. Turns out she ended up being 13.5" but I seriously didn't think that would happen. She was quite a bit bigger than Ember when I got her.

You can look at the charts and know the line but in the end, it is just a guess.

Yes I am, trust me, I've been counting down since they were BORN! it's insane! lol. I met them at 3 weeks and although I had one puppy really picked out that I wanted (a blue merle) I ended up switching to a tri! I'm down to 6 days though :smile2:. I get to make a 8 hr drive there sat. and turn around and come back sun for another 8 hr drive. :eek2: Good thing I've been on this breeder's list since she tried to impregnate my sable female. (4-5 years ago) This is her first litter in 10 years that produced more than one puppy (7 total). But I've known I wanted a puppy since the mother of the litter was a puppy. She has such an amazing personality, very playful and will do anything type of drive. Where the father is more serious and wants to do anything you tell him to do it. Both dogs have obedience titles, agility titles and rally titles.

yep.. I sometimes wish there wasn't a chart, but it is nice to watch our fur kids grow up.

awwww but at least you love him :biggrin2: My girl I have now, we never thought she'd be able to do agility yet alone dance on her hind legs. She broke her back leg completely in half when she was about 2 months old. Vets couldn't do anything but wrap it and pray that it healed itself. Luckily it did, but sometimes when she jumps she doesn't get the leg up high enough to clear the bar. But, if that is her only issue, I'm perfectly happy.

He is absolutely adorable! 6 days! I am sooo jealous LOL My Mackie was a tri. Thats the one I lost in Sept of last year. Couldn't do a tri this soon.

Back in November, I was watching the shelties in the ring at the Coyote Classic show here in Tucson and kinda felt this pull on the back of my neck. Turned around and there she was, the mom of my future baby, in a pen behind a tent. I went over and and fell in love. Turns out she was in heat and was going to be bred. Do I points for longer waiting torture??

This is the reason I asked the original question about picking for agility :smile2:
My Callahan was the most laid back boy--he ate slow, he walked slow, and I have a picture of him literally smelling the flowers on a walk. I can see the "you've got to be freakin kidding me" look on his face if I ever tried to get him to jump over anything LOL

Sorry for your loss. This is actually the first tri to ever enter in a sheltie household . We've only had sables all my life (and my older brothers' lives). My parents recently (nov) got a bi-blue pup when they were planning on getting a tri. so, our pack is becoming more colorful. awww wow you have definitely out waited me
