Not sure where the data for this came from. 18-25yrs is extremely rare for canines. Working in a veterinary clinc for 25+ yrs, I saw alot of dogs make 14yrs. After that a smaller percentage 15-16yrs. Rare 17-18yrs and over that a handful. The oldest a 24yrs cock a poo(fed gaines burger and mighty dog canned:dead:, I asked). Alot of luck is involved to get a dog to such an avanced age. Poodles and their crosses did seem to do the best. It seemed also that the thing that most of the dogs I saw who reached the upper teens had in common was they maintained a normal weight over their lifetime. Less wear and tear.

I think of 18-25 as 90-100 in people we can get there but not alot of us will.
Of course, I would be perfectly happy if my dogs made it to 20yrs.:smile2:

The dog that was 24 years old could have been in guinness book of world records. Right now the oldest dog in that book is 21 years old.

Really?:eek2: Wow I didn't know that. He lived 10yrs ago in S. Dak. I wonder if the clininc still has the old file.

I'd really like to know where you found that statistic.

My first two dogs were fed IAMS (at the time it was a premium food, not the junk it is now) and both lived pretty long lives. My Finnish Spitz was 17 when she died and we were lucky to see that. The average lifespan of the Finkie is 13-14 years.

As you know, my Malamute, quite possibly,died from the contaminated dog food in 2007. However, she was already starting to have health issues due to age when that happened. We don't really know how old she was since she was a shelter save; we estimate about 13 or 14. (My Mal was either undersized or mixed because she was to the smaller side.)

Edan's breeder, who takes EXCELLENT care of her dogs (they are companions first and show dogs second in her mind), recently lost the matriarch of her line, she was 14. She had known heart issues (she'd been on heart medication for about 2 years) but her death was a combination of old age (too tired to continue) and the heart.

There is also the fact that the larger the breed the shorter the lifespan. I know people who have large dogs and their expected lifespan is only about 7-10 on average.

If you little angel made it to 14, it is quite possible her health issues were just due to old age and nothing you did wrong.

Interesting article. It looked like she was the oldest living dog.

Also from the article:

I guess old Patches can't be the new record holder.:smile2:
 
I got some of the TOTW High Prairie food today and we still had some Rachel Ray left and Dad had two bowls one with TOTW and one with Rachael. Penny spit out a piece of TOTW and Trevor ate some but went back to Rachael Ray. Should we just eliminate the Rachael Ray altogether and force the issue? I told Dad that the RR is probably like junk food so of course they will want that instead.

Most people..kids especially would choose a Big Mac over Tuna Salad any day !! lol :biggrin2:
