I am happy for the 14 years I had with her .... I just read somewhere that with PROPER FOOD ...love...shelter...( and barring the health issues of a given species ) your dogs life expectancy is 18 -25 years not 11-15.( the food factor being the main issue of not reaching 18 -25) Of course, you have to take internet advice with a grain of salt.
Just some food for thought.![]()
Not sure where the data for this came from. 18-25yrs is extremely rare for canines. Working in a veterinary clinc for 25+ yrs, I saw alot of dogs make 14yrs. After that a smaller percentage 15-16yrs. Rare 17-18yrs and over that a handful. The oldest a 24yrs cock a poo(fed gaines burger and mighty dog canned
, I asked). Alot of luck is involved to get a dog to such an avanced age. Poodles and their crosses did seem to do the best. It seemed also that the thing that most of the dogs I saw who reached the upper teens had in common was they maintained a normal weight over their lifetime. Less wear and tear.I think of 18-25 as 90-100 in people we can get there but not alot of us will.
Of course, I would be perfectly happy if my dogs made it to 20yrs.

Wow I didn't know that. He lived 10yrs ago in S. Dak. I wonder if the clininc still has the old file.
