Seminars

Oh very cool. Let me know. Also, let me know of his handling system, if he uses one (I can research this too).

The seminar was great. Our first 2 hours were on contacts and how to train contacts for small dogs v. big dogs. Since you've been having trouble with DW and A-Frame, I think you might really benefit from seeing how he trains running contacts. I'm not planning to retrain Phebe, but if I were and wanted running for both, I would use his method because it emphasizes running all the way through the contact -- no hopping off.

Also, Gerry spent a lot of time with each handler and their dog, helping fine tune their handling, and the answers weren't the same for everyone because each of us had different issues. I also learned a couple of neat handling moves that I haven't decided yet if I'll use or not. One would be kind of controversial because you send the dog behind your back. LOL
Watch the move that Lisa Frick makes following the tunnel, at about 20 seconds into this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggVgVWkS_ig

The second move was a single-hand threadle cue that I still don't quite know how to describe, but it worked.

As far as handling methods, Gerry isn't strict about following either of the major systems, but uses pieces from each and some of his own adaptations. I definitely recommend going to Gerry's seminar. If I had to choose between a weekend of trialing and a seminar, I would pick the seminar.

Okay, I got on the working list for Gerry's seminar also. I may have to decide which to do. IMHO, $350 for 2 days, working spots is cheap compared to Derrett. I think Daisy Peel's is the same. I was trying to find information about this guy and can't find a darn thing that really talks about his seminars. lol.

I would say these seminars are cutting WAY into my trialling budget, but honestly, I need so much work, maybe it's best I don't trial a lot. lol. Contacts, distance, start-line stays. What more could go wrong? Oh yeah, Koji getting crazy before running. What's up with that?

there is summer camp seminar of 2-4 days with Rhonda Carter, Jennifer Crank, Jen Pinder and Rachel Sanders, I just emailed them to see if any auditing spots avail. Just how much you can get from auditing, anyone can input?
OTOH I am asking myself, do I need more seminars? am already training with Dana, if I can only process whatever she is teaching me out team would be clean clean clean... Do you benefit from seeing many ways of training?
Dana and Tangle just got their Mach last week

Here's my thought on camps...it's a ton of information, and you have to be really, really good at processing it. Even if all the people at the camp use the same system, chances are that their handling styles differ. You may get one instruction from one person, and a totally different one from another. For that to work...you really have to know yourself and your dog.

I'm not sure I'm at that point yet.

That's what I was wondering too. Am I ready for that? I doubt it. lol. There's a camp up north and I was thinking...maybe. But no, not this year.

And congrats to Dana and Tangle on their MACH!!! Yay!

Exactly how much foundations have you put on Kojii?I would do one day with Daisy Peel and not trial for a couple of months. All that money you could be spending on going to a good trainer .Just my opinon.

I bet that'd be a really interesting camp.
I'm getting ready to do a seminar with Jennifer Crank here next month at my trainer's place. First day is a sit down seminar with Jenn on training regimen, and how she works her dogs leading up to a big trial. Second day is crosses (I'm auditing), and third day is 180s, 270s, and serpentines (working spot). With the prices, I asked my trainer which she thought would be most beneficial to my excellent girls, and it was that one, so that's the one we're going to do the working spot for. Should be a lot of good information, even when just auditing. I'm really looking forward to the first day. What is going to be presented will be similar to what the big Thoroughbred trainers do leading up to a big race to have their horses peak at that time. I'd love to have better insight into what the world team type trainers do leading up to important trials with their dogs to have them at the top of their game.
Jenn's having a seminar at her place this Monday on nationals prep. I think that would've been a great opportunity for Athena and I with nationals less than a month away. I just didn't find out about it in time. Of course, Misty is putting me through the ringer right now with repeated ISC style courses being thrown at me for prep.

Sharon made a good point. So I'll see what you guys think.
I'll have to find out if I can just do one day, or if I "must" do both days.

Here's Gerry's seminar:
Sat - Obstacle Discrimination
Sun - Send and Run Skills / Speed Control aka "Open 'em up, close 'em down"
$350 for two days working spot

I'm thinking I don't need Sat, but Sun would be good for me and Koji. We need to learn running skills.

Here's Daisy's seminar:
FRIDAY – JUMPING AND WEAVING
$175 for this one-day seminar.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY – CONTACTS AND HANDLING
Daisy will discuss how to train, proof, increase speed and independence and deal with problems that arise with contact obstacles. She will cover both running and stopped contacts. This seminar is also open to all levels as she will customize her instruction for each dog/handler team.
$350 for this two-day seminar.

I don't think I need Friday. But it looks like Sat/Sun is a package deal. I want the contacts seminar for sure.

Thoughts on what you think I need or don't need? I'm sure most of you know my issues. lol. If not, its okay.

Sounds like a good one Stacey.I wish I could afford to take the time off for the Nationals but can't.I think there is like 222 shelties.
