That last picture is really funny. "What, robbing the cradle? Noooo, yea, uh... no way. Psh."

Ah, Moist n Meaty... that's what my mother feeds her mini poodle. He is going on 10 years and been through a lot (scabies as a puppy, hernia removal, testes didn't descend and the vet the breeder recommended sent him home crusty with blood and pus - so we took him to our vet, who had to open him up again, dislocated hip from jumping off the couch, got hit by a car and rolled away only to hit a tree). Overall, that dog has been through more surgeries and natural trauma than I've ever known a dog to go through. And all the while, he got Moist n Meaty and really does love it. I think he thinks he's a cat with nine lives.

Anyway, I also hope the vet trip is fine. I'm sure as he settles in and feels your love, he will start to eat. Perhaps giving him a doggie vitamin would make you feel better about his health while he is settling in? Also, if he won't eat, just try plain broth of some sort to get something in his belly. Did you try any of the food warm?

I just can't get over what a little cutie he is, I can't believe anyone would give him up, especially when he's so young! If I were you I'd have taken him in without a second thought as well.

Did I miss a thread somewhere? All of a sudden you had another dog, and I'd love to hear how you came into contact with his previous owners?

If I did miss a thread, could you post the link to it? I tried looking for it but couldn't find it.

He is just such a cutie. His face is adorable and there is a look in eyes that says,

"When I trust you (and I will b/c I am a sheltie and it is in my nature to love my humans), I will eat and I will play and I will tell Emma I am ok!!!!!"

What a sweetie!

Ditto all of this!!

He's so cute I could not have walked away either. I want to know the whole story too!

The story of the "Tri for Trade" starts in the thread Sasha's puppy scrapbook and videos. Basically this elderly guy called Alan in response to one of our ads for the pups and stated that he had a "show dog with champion bloodlines 14 months old" that he wanted to trade for one of our sable pups "because my wife doesn't like this color." Alan apparently told the guy where we live in the course of the guy saying that he had a family reunion in the Weaverville area on Saturday and could drop by with the dog then. We did not encourage this guy, or invite him over. On Saturday, about 15 min before Aaron and Vanna arrived to see Tripp aka Bentley he shows up with his wife and the dog. He then tells the story that the dog is "shaky, doesn't learn fast, and is not a smart as other shelties I've had." He states that he bought the dog 2 months ago "out of a cage" and tries to get us to trade a puppy for his problem. After multiple times of me saying that the pups were all spoken for he then tries to talk me into breeding Sasha to his dog "back to back breeding, you make more money that way." I told him I only schedule one pregnancy per year for my girls. He gives me his card so that I can call him next time Sasha is in heat (!). I go back in the house because I'm upset by the tiny shaking dog that doesn't lift his eyes. The guy then tells Alan "well I won't have this dog long, I'll get another one." When Alan tells me this later in the day, I call the guy and offer to buy his dog. He names an amount, saying "that's what I got in him, I won't take less." We turn him down. I spend a sleepless night tossing and weeping. We call the next day and arrange to buy the dog. We get a THIRD story of how the dog is doing. I decide that this old guy is not quite intact upstairs and take the dog and go home. Newton stops shaking on the car ride home...and in fact now only trembles when surprised. He's running around the house and playing with the other dogs some but mainly jumping up to the couch to sit with us and monitor the other dogs.

So Newton spent the first 14 months of his life in a puppy mill cage. I don't know if he has been used as a stud...no litters are registered to him on the AKC site but I may get more history once I am registered as the owner. We will have him tested for heartworms and infections/STD today.

I think Newton is starting to realize that he is in a place now where he is loved just for being himself. There are no unreasoable expectations for him. With all the problems this guy said he had I cannot believe he would want to breed him. That would have been a real disaster! May God bless you guys for taking him in and at quite an expence too.

Newt!

He is a tiny cutie, Janet! You have such a big heart for saving him, but you know, he will remember and reward you in the long run. SAved dog or cats are almost ALWAYS the best pets. *huggles*

I think it was Lovely that gave a synopsis of this thread - somewhere around page 4.

Ooops! Just noticed that Janet also gave the history a couple of posts down too!

From one picky eater "owner" to another, its a tough call.

Ultimately, you want them eating pretty much what the others are eating, so I can understand being hesitant to introduce all kinds of great treats to get him eating. Yeah, he'll learn to eat, but maybe only the good stuff. Before you know, he's eating steak and the rest are looking at him jealously as they chew their kibble.

This being a puppy mill dog, I expect he will stay small. He was probably bred as a "mini-Sheltie". As some wise person on this thread pointed out, it is rare for a dog to starve himself. Newt does not strike me like that.

If I recall, Janet, you are mostly a kibble-feeder. So I would be inclined to stick with whatever kibble you feed your other pups. Mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with either canned food, gravy, hot water, pumkin, whatever seems to strike his interest. Then gradually reduce the proportion till you are feeding more of the regular stuff and less and less of the special. You may always have to supplement a little, but at least you won't drive the others nuts with his "special status". And yes, now Bacca only gets 15 minutes and then its gone.

That's what I'm still going through. I had finally gotten Bacca back on 100% kibble again, and now he's changed his mind again. He'll only eat if I mix in canned food. So rather than driving Indy nuts, Indy now gets some too. Only 1 tbsp each. Bacca eats, and Indy thinks he's in heaven!
